Data Scientist

Data has the power to radically transform construction and keep existing structures in our cities safe against climate change and environmental risks. BKwai is building a platform to deliver insights to engineers in the construction industry using research and applied data science. Our platform brings together data from the latest in sensors, satellites that can measure millimetres of movement from space, and environmental data. We want to harness the power of data-driven insights to make smarter, safer decisions and predictions.

The company is a spin-out from the University of Cambridge and backed by the university and Octopus Ventures, with strong market traction in a huge potential market. Our Founder has worked internationally in the fields of construction, asset management and satellite data and she is well connected within the sector.

What working as a Data Scientist at BKwai looks like:

We are building BKwai’s data science team, and you will be one of the founding members of the area.  The team is responsible for research, design and prototype time-series analytics tools and machine-learning based approaches that will be incorporated within our SaaS product, which is used by tier 1 construction companies. You will also be heavily involved on bringing those features into live, by working closely with product managers, data, backend and frontend engineers in the team.

As a data scientist at BKwai, your day will start with a team stand-up where we check progress of the streams of work and discuss possible blockers to try to overcome those. In your day to day, you will be manipulating IoT data, satellite data and diverse sources of environmental data; researching potential new sources of data and assessing its quality and suitability for our product and models; exploring new techniques and approaches to solve hard problems in time series prediction, anomaly detection, and signal separation; creating prototypes and working with engineers to put those into production.

One of the responsibilities of data science in the team is to make sure that new features are reliable and useful for our customers. This involves data exploration, model prototyping, testing and collecting customer feedback, in an iterate manner, always with the end-user in mind. It also involves model maintenance and support for other teams as we are the go-to-team for any question related to analytical and machine learning driven features.

What we are looking for in candidates:
  • Proven experience as a Data Scientist.
  • Ability to formulate open ended real-life problems into technical problems.
  • Good understanding of various machine learning approaches, in particular gradient boosting methods, but also the trade-offs between machine learning and rules-based models.
  • Experience with Python, common data science libraries (numpy, pandas, scikit-learn), version control (Git) and unix based systems and cloud platforms.
  • Experience with production environments where data science products were deployed and served to customers.
  • Experience exploring and manipulating time-series data and its use on live-deployments.
  • Enthusiasm for working in a start-up and the constant challenges it throws your way.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with your colleagues, share knowledge with peers, problem-solving and inquisitive mind, and a self-starter attitude (when you see something not working, you’ll flag it and be part of the solution).
  • Practical decision making.
  • Ability to communicate effectively – from writing documentation to demoing your latest work to stakeholders, as well as listening to and interpreting requirements and feedback.
Bonus points:
  • Familiarity with AWS, MLFlow, Git
  • Willing to get hands-on with engineering tasks.
  • The opportunity to join a fast-growing, agile, and diverse team passionate about innovation and making a difference
  • Share option scheme
  • Company pension scheme (matched to 5%)
  • 25 days paid holiday + bank holidays on top of that
  • Access to lifestyle benefits from Heka
  • Flexibility on working hours to help with family and other life commitments
  • Hybrid office-home working (some time with your team, some time working from home)
  • Opportunities for continued learning and self-development, including courses and attending events/conferences
  • Team catch-ups, town halls and knowledge sharing presentations
  • When COVID permits us to be in the office, we have a space in central London, with snacks and beverages (the engineering team particularly enjoy the ability to play table tennis at lunch)
  • Regular team socials
  • Importantly, we have a great team of smart, fun and inspiring colleagues, who work well to support each other
Application process:
  • Stage 1: 30 mins discovery video call
  • Stage 2: 55 mins interview with elements of our technical team, focusing on your previous experience and technical knowledge
  • Stage 3: 30 mins pairing exercise
  • Stage 4: 30 mins informal chat with 2 non-technical members of the team.

Time of interview: 2:30h

We are looking to add to our culture with people from diverse backgrounds who are motivated to make a positive change, and to do so with integrity and an open mind.
